Discovery Loop Monheim Old Town Circular

The Monheim Discovery Loop begins in the Landschaftspark Rheinbogen – the Rhine Bow Landscape Park – which offers a wide range of leisure time activities for families and sports enthusiasts. The unspoilt hiking trail first takes you up to Marienburg. This stately villa was built during the 19th century as a summer house for the Cologne-based lawyer and politician Eugen von Kesseler and is well worth a visit. Today it is used as a meeting and congress centre. The villa is surrounded by a park of the same name and is an oasis of green in the city centre offering a wonderful view of the Rhine foreshore.

The route continues into the rustic old town of Monheim. Here you can discover exciting attractions such as the Karnevalskabinett museum and the Schelmenturm, the town’s landmark. Around the old market square, you can choose from numerous restaurants, beer gardens and cafes to have a refreshing break.

Finally, the Discovery Loop takes you along Monheim’s main shopping street to the Marienkapelle church. Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have been coming by land and sea to Monheim to visit the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary on the altar. Close to the church is the former home of the painter August Deusser. Built in 1840, it today houses the Heimatkundliche Sammlung of Monheim – the local history collection. Here you can rejoin the neanderland STEIG, which will take you along the Rhine promenade back to the Monheim Rhine bow.
