You can begin the Kaihu trail from one of several points: a route guide can be found on signs to the south of Kaihunharju and on the western shores of Kattilanlahti and Kaihunlahti. Part of the route is asphalt road running alongside Ristiinantie road and part follows the Kaihunharju path. The terrain is easy to traverse with even asphalt and sand roads, and there are several rest benches for breaks. The route runs via Kaijanniemi to Mikkelipuisto park, where you can find more information about Saimaa Geopark. Meanwhile, to the west of Kattilanlahti there is a path to the Geopark info centre. While on the trail, it’s well worth paying a visit to the Pursiala pothole, which is around one kilometre south of Kaihunharju.
On the Kaijanniemi the trail passes through a winding esker ridge. Near Kaijanniemi there is a small pond with two fountains in the centre. The fountains provide passersby and nature enthusiasts with a brilliant opportunity to take a moment to listen to the babble of water. As you arrive at Kaijanniemi, you will see Kaihu beach. The beach has clean and spacious changing rooms. There are also toilets, a beach volley court, a diving platform, and a children’s playground. Along the southern shore of Kattilanlahti, the route runs along an ancient shore formed during the Greater Saimaa phase.
The Kaihu trail is suitable for anyone, young or old, who enjoys spending time outdoors in nature. Move along the route at your own leisure, admiring the tranquil scenery and nature, or try out some faster-paced sports near the Mikkeli city centre.
